The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Plug-In is the little brother to the mighty SMA-1 plug-in but it packs a similar punch. It supports two compression ratios, three buss levels and three direct outs, two of which are available in stereo. While its sonic character may not be quite as aggressive and edgy as that of the SMA-1, the Shadow Hills does a tremendous job of taming overbearing transients and of providing a great deal of control over the overall dynamics of your mix.
It’s a remarkably versatile plug-in that we’ve used in many different musical contexts. One of the keys for us to the Shadow Hills is that it’s easy to put a lot of sound into it so that you can dial the dynamics and tame your transients with great control.
We’ve often used it to tame overbearing transients and save a mix by using the Mastering Compressor to drop the overall dynamics by a factor of three or more. We use it on the buss when working with vocalists or acoustic instruments and it’s especially useful in that situation.
As a mastering tool, the Shadow Hills can provide a great deal of compressional character with only a slight reduction in overall volume. As a more general mastering tool, we find it to be extremely useful because we can work in the stereo busses, each with a separate Mastering Compressor, and at the same time tame the transients by having multiple separate compressors.
In stereo, if you have both L and R compressors on the mix, you can have a much larger dynamic range available for the mix. That means you have to be much more cautious about the way you mix; it’s easier to over-compress and over-boost the mix or to over-compress the L and R buses separately.
You have to be a little more careful than you are in mono, but it’s not impossible to get the best of both worlds by using the Shadow Hills on the Mastering Compressor.
The Shadow Hills can also be used to create slightly more pronounced transients when you’re working with a wide dynamic range. For example, we might use the Shadow Hills on the master bus to get a little more focus on the transients, and we might use it on the L and R busses to have a bit more control over the dynamics.
